Urban Farm Open Day

On 15 March 2025, Eats, Shoots & Roots hosted an Urban Farm Open Day to celebrate the launch of the Sayur in the City Urban Farm. Located within the grounds of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) along Jalan Hang Jebat, the space is designed to serve as both a productive urban farm and a living classroom—for the YWCA’s Vocational Training and Opportunity Centre (VTOC) as well as for Eats, Shoots & Roots.

Naqib, ESR’s Head of Greenscapes, kicked off the event by sharing the story behind Eats, Shoots & Roots, the guiding philosophy behind our work, and the vision for this new space—a farm that cultivates both food and learning. Guests were then briefed on the day’s programme, which included a guided farm tour, an interactive planting activity, and the opportunity to browse Eats, Shoots & Roots merchandise.

A highlight of the day was the farm-inspired refreshment spread, lovingly prepared by Chef Lyn from our sister organisation, Rimbun Montessori. Known for her delicious plant-based meals for students, Chef Lyn curated a colourful, garden-inspired menu. It featured three signature dips—aubergine, pesto, and herb cream cheese—served with crostini, a vibrant sweet potato salad, a selection of fresh fruits including banana, watermelon, and guava, and two refreshing coolers: one made with roselle, pineapple, and lemon, and the other a zesty lemon-cucumber blend.

By the end of the day, guests left with a powerful reminder: you don’t need a large space to grow food or reconnect with nature. With intention, care, and creativity, any corner of the city can become a thriving edible garden—a space for learning, nourishment, and community. This space  is a culmination of the work, dedication and love of the ESR team and volunteers. Without each and every one of you, none of this would be possible.
