SATU RASA: Farm-to-Table

In partnership with the Young Women’s Christian Association’s (YWCAKL) Vocational Training Opportunity Centre (VTOC), we hosted our 2026 Farm-to-Table showcase at Sayur in the City (SITC), our urban farm. Currently funded by Yayasan Bursa, our Urban Farm Programme runs in tandem with VTOC’s Culinary & Baking Programme. As we teach the students the basics of gardening and urban farming, produce from the farm is used to supplement their cooking lessons and daily meals, bringing everything full circle in a meaningful way.

Different Roots at One Shared Table

Now in its 8th year since 2018, our annual Farm-to-Table is a culmination of the past year’s Urban Farm Programme. Hosted for our close supporters and sponsors, the event is also a chance for the students and the farm to show how much they’ve grown since the start of their year. The theme for this year: SATU RASA – a celebration of diversity in crops, culture, and community.

Regenerative Agriculture In The City

The day began on the farm, where our guests were given a tour of the farm’s ever-evolving landscape and its newest regenerative approach: syntropic agroforestry. By planting in diverse, layered systems that mimic natural forests, we can accelerate soil regeneration while cultivating biodiversity and continuous harvests. In a city shaped by rapid development, this living ecosystem stands as proof that diversity strengthens resilience.

The Women That Changed The Landscape

This celebration of diversity continued throughout the rest of the event. With recipes by celebrity Chef Azrah Kamala and Head Chef of the VTOC, the Farm-to-Table spread of the day was prepared by the 20 young women of the Culinary & Baking Programme, and featured ingredients grown just steps away from the hall where we feasted.

The students presented the dishes in their mother tongues – English, Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin, Tamil, Semai, and Temiar, speaking with a newfound confidence honed through weeks of practice and culinary trials. When it came time for the brunch to begin, they joined our guests at the table. Talking cards with conversation prompts were used to invite discussion, so that regardless of background, everyone was able to bond through conversation and a shared meal.

A Multi-Cultural Farm-To-Table Feast

The brunch menu reflected Malaysia’s multi-cultural heritage, with dishes such as:

  • Ulam Lou Sang
  • Kung Pao Jackfruit
  • Okra Raitha
  • Sayur Lodeh
  • Satu Rasa Rice
  • Cincau Birds Nest Jelly
  • Banana Cake
  • Uni-tea

Growing Food, Soil, and Futures

Since opening to the public in 2025, SITC reminds us that food is more than what we eat – it is a connection to the land, the people who grow it and the communities we build around it.
