Blog One of the best things about having your own edible garden is being able to play "Masterchef" every time lunch time rolls in We had a ton of harvest to play around with so we decided to make a quick and easy pesto with brazilian spinach, thai basil, some other leafy greens and herbs, toasted sesame seeds and a little bit of cili padi for some Put it all in a blender with some olive oil, salt & pepper, blitz it together and done! Presto pesto You can pretty much eat or cook the pesto with anything but we had some leftover rice, so voila: Brazilian Spinach Pesto Fried Rice ala ESR š¼#eatsshootsandroots #growyourown #cookyourown #garden #plants #vegetables #herbs #grow #greenBy Eats, Shoots & Roots, 8 yearsJanuary 16, 2018 ago

Blog Here in Malaysia, rice is a staple in almost all households, and for some, the water used to rinse the rice before cooking serves more purpose. Raise your hand if you water your plants with rice water š½But is watering your plants with rice water really any good? This is just one of the many questions people have about fertilising their plants. Speaking of, how much is too much fertiliser? š¤-Join us for a 2-day course on Soil Science for Gardens & Farms with Dr Christopher Teh and Dr Tan Ngai Paing on 3-4 February (Saturday & Sunday) @ UPM, Serdang to have these questions answered. We will also be covering the differences between various fertilizer types (organic vs synthetics), testing soil elements and how to interpret the soil test results & signs of plant problems like fruit or flower abortion, leaf drops and nutrient deficiencies. Blog āHow To⦠Make A Fruit Fly Trapā | READY, SET, GROW! – 7th Issue, September 2017-INGREDIENTSPlastic BottleCutterCotton WoolPliersBinding WireLighterString or ropePheromone: methyl eugenol (a chemical compound found naturally in many herbs and spice pants, available from nurseries or hardware stores)-METHOD:1. Cut the top off the plastic bottle about a quarter of the distance down from the bottle neck with a knife or blade. The cut off neck will serve as an entry funnel into the rest of the bottle.āØ-2. Cut a piece of wire measuring 5cm-7.5cm (2 inches to 3 inches) and heat one end of it with the lighter or a match. Stick the heated end of the wire into the side of the bottle, 5cm from the bottom.āØ-3. Knot one end of the wire so it doesnāt fall into the bottle. Bend the other end to create a hook for the cotton wool.āØ-4. Roll a bit of cotton wool into a ball. Using gloves, soak the piece of cotton wool in the pheromones and place it onto the hook. Wash your hands carefully after.āØ-5. Insert the cut-off bottle top upside down so the neck forms a funnel leading into the bottle. Tape it tight.āØ-6. Using string, hang the bottle horizontally in a shaded area near your fruiting plants. The pheromone will last two to three weeks, and will attract male fruit flies from up to 20m away. Clear the trap when it is full.āØ-TIP: Look out for little holes in your fruits. If there is a small hole that looks infected, chances are there are maggots inside it-āØLearn more on how to make your fruit fly trap in Star2, The Star #eatsshootsandroots #garden #seed #plant #ReadySetGrowESR #HowTo #TheStarBy Eats, Shoots & Roots, 8 yearsJanuary 4, 2018 ago

Blog READY, SET, GROW! āBee-ing In Touch With Natureā – 10th Issue, December 2017.After Faridah Khalid, 55, left her job in 2016, she was looking for a new hobby when she encountered stingless bees at her uncleās house. Intrigued by these bees, known also as trigona or kelulut bees, she decided to try her hand at stingless bee-keeping, with the support and help of her husband, Wan Ahmad Fuad, 58..āThe first three months were hell, because I knew nothing about bees or gardening at all! I started researching day and night in books, on Google, and through asking other people. But even then, it wasnāt enough because different people have different sources, environments, plants, species. Thatās when I started to learn from the bees themselves. I would start my day at 7 in the morning, sitting down for hours to see what they do and how they live. Thatās how I gained information and knowledge,ā said Faridah..āWe need to teach the youngsters the importance of bees to our environment as pollinators. Without bees, they wonāt get the trees around them. We need to educate people about why we shouldnāt be scared of them.ā.Read more about Faridah and her connection with stingless bees in Star2, The Star* #eatsshootsandroots #garden #ReadySetGrowESR #TheStarBy Eats, Shoots & Roots, 8 yearsDecember 29, 2017 ago

Blog Pretty deadly: flowers from the sengkuang / chinese turnip / jicama plants growing in #gasing. The only edible part is the root, everything else contains the toxin, rotenone, which is used to poison insects and fish. We’re growing these next to a bed of cucumbers and we’ve noticed that whist the cucumbers attract many different pests, the sengkuang plant is so far pretty free from bug attacks. Point of the story: not everything pretty is safe to eat! #poisongarden #eatsshootsandroots @eatsshootsandroots https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RotenoneBy Eats, Shoots & Roots, 8 yearsDecember 19, 2017 ago
