14 Apr 2013: Building a Cob Oven

Building a Cob Oven

Join Austrian permaculturists, Michael Schellauf and Juergen Soecknick in building a cob oven from scratch with materials found locally.

In this practical workshop, you will learn how to build a Roman pizza and bread oven just like the ones that they have been building since 3000 years ago in Europe, by hand. We built one in the past at our last site, Embun Pagi, using clay, mixed with rice husk and sand; and it works perfect in the tropics. We baked everything from smokey pizzas to all sorts of breads in our oven, simply using the ambers of a couple of fallen tree branches and logs found in our neighbourhood.
As the cob oven will take a few weeks to cure after building, there will be an optional pizza party on the 27th April when we fire up the oven for the very first time!

Michael Schellauf

A tinkerer, builder, and permaculturist, Michael grew up on a farm in the Alps, and for the past 7 years, has been running his own permaculture farm. He built his own house out of natural and traditional materials and methods and produces most of the energy which he needs to run his farm and home on site. His cob oven for example, produces heat that raises the temperature of the walls of his house during winter. Since two years ago, Michael has been teaching Permaculture Design Courses all around the temperate region of the Alps and also runs practical permaculture workshops at his farm and elsewhere.

Juergen Soecknick

Juergen is a certified Permaculture Designer and has travelled extensively through SE-Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, where he studied and worked at several Permaculture projects & organic farms. Together with Sabina he has led the set-up of Embun Pagi and has organised and taught in several Permaculture Design Courses and workshops. He has a background in biology and is passionate about the workings of soils and plants as well as sharing practical solutions for a regenerative and resilient future.
