School Gardens with Janet Millington
School gardens are a wonderful way to use the schoolyard as a classroom, to reconnect students with the natural world, and teach them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills that integrate with subjects such as math, science, art, physical education, social studies, and more as well as non-academic development goals, including personal and social responsibility.
This full day program for school teachers will be led by Janet Millington. The professional development day will empower teachers to use Permaculture design principles for: a whole site school plan incorporating a garden of appropriate size for their needs and capabilities; a School Environmental Management Plan; links to school gardens and curriculum opportunities; and understanding links to opportunities outside the school gate including outdoor education. Janet Millington offers a comprehensive plan for developing a school garden; a plan to guide the teacher through a process from the formation of the idea to what to do with the garden during the holidays. Janet links the learning to the curriculum, providing samples of unit plans and describing a programming method based on lists of skills and knowledge; the essential learnings to take the whole curriculum into the outdoors.
Janet Millington is an experienced Permaculture designer and teacher. M.Ed.C.A., Grad. Dip Ed., Dip Permaculture Design and Diploma Permaculture. Involvement with Permaculture began when Janet developed Environmental Study Programs in schools in south-west Sydney in the late seventies. This work led to the study and implementation of Permaculture solutions in the early eighties. Although working in Permaculture from “Permaculture One and Two” and the “Designer’ Manual”, she did her first course with Geoff Lawton in 1995 and then one with Bill Mollison in 1997. Janet and Mick Millington have designed and implemented a Permaculture design on their 35 acre property, incorporating Bamboo plantation and Farm Forestry. The property has a productive home garden, small animal systems, orchard, food forest as well as restoration of riparian zones. Permaculture courses have been run from the farm in Eumundi for the past ten years. Janet has been a director of both the Permaculture Institute and Permaculture International and a committee member of Permaculture Noosa. She co-founded the Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre with Sonya Wallace and is very active in the Transition Towns Movement. Janet wrote “Outdoor Classrooms…A Handbook for School Gardens”, with Carolyn Nuttall and presents seminars to teachers wishing to set up and fully utilize a school garden in the curriculum.
